Re ection of Nonlinear Waves from a Domain Boundary
نویسنده
چکیده
Boundaries between domains of traveling waves are studied in convection in an 8% mixture of ethanol and water. A con guration is described in which rolls move in opposite directions on either side of a domain wall. Demodulation techniques are used to measure the interaction of waves across the boundary. It is found that rolls approaching the boundary with an oblique angle of incidence are re ected from the boundary. The re ection coe cient and the attenuation of the re ected wave are measured.

Re ̄ection of equatorial Kelvin waves at eastern ocean boundaries Part I: hypothetical boundaries
A baroclinic shallow-water model is developed to investigate the eect of the orientation of the eastern ocean boundary on the behavior of equatorial Kelvin waves. The model is formulated in a spherical polar coordinate system and includes dissipation and nonlinear terms, eects which have not been previously included in analytical approaches to the problem. Both equatorial and middle latitude ...
متن کاملEvolution Equations , I : The n - sphere and n - ball
In a brilliant series of papers, A. D. Aleksandrov (1956,1957,1958a,1958b) and Aleksandrov-Volkov (1958) introduced a re ection method based upon the Hopf boundary-point lemma and strong maximum principle. Aleksandrov used his method to show that for a general class of curvature functions, any constant curvature hypersurface embedded in either Euclidean space, hyperbolic space, or a hemisphere ...
متن کاملTransport Theory for Acoustic Waves with Re ection and Transmission at Interfaces
Transport theoretic boundary conditions are derived for acoustic wave re ection and transmission at a rough interface with small random uctuations. The Wigner distribution is used to go from waves to energy transport in the high frequency limit, and the Born expansion is used to calculate the e ect of the random rough surface. The smoothing method is also used to remove the grazing angle singul...
متن کاملTransport Equations for Waves in a Half Space
We derive boundary conditions for the phase space energy density of acoustic waves in a half space, in the high frequency limit. These boundary conditions generalize the usual re ection-transmission relations for plane waves and are well suited for the study of wave propagation in bounded random media in the radiative transport approximation [15]. The high frequency analysis is based on direct ...
متن کاملOn Absorbing Boundary Conditions for Linearized Euler Equations by a Perfectly Matched Layer
Recently, Berenger introduced a Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) technique for absorbing electromagnetic waves. In the present paper, a perfectly matched layer is proposed for absorbing out-going two-dimensional waves in a uniform mean ow, governed by linearized Euler equations. It is well known that the linearized Euler equations support acoustic waves, which travel with the speed of sound relati...
